Harriet the Invincible

Hamster Princess: Harriet the Invincible by Ursula Vernon

The comic story of a hamster princess whose Sleeping Beauty tale is a bit derailed by her being herself.  A pretty standard rebellious princess, to be sure, but brightly drawn and with a quirky fondness for fractions.

She is invincible only for the first part, where she is under the curse, because she knows that the curse will keep her alive to die the right way.  She takes advantage of this to joust and jump from cliffs and hunt down ogrecats.  Meanwhile, her parents line up a prince to kiss her.

But when the wicked rat-fairy shows up to force her to prick her finger on a hamster wheel, Harriet cleverly gets her to prick her finger instead.  Except that causes the spell go wild and put everyone but Harriet (and her riding quail Mumfrey) to sleep.  Including of course the prince her parents had gotten there.

Solving it involves a crone who bakes nice cookies, a hydra and a prince who play cards, a hardware store, a paperboy's skills, twisted fairy tales (saving the giant from Jack, and the witch from Hansel and Gretel), and more.

Though I quibbled a bit when a fairy tale prince was cursed in his cradle under the impression he was a princess. Really, folks, lots of fairy tale princes get cursed in their own right.
