Looking for a specific fantasy rec...

Alright. I'm looking for a specific type of fantasy books for le boyfriend, whose grumpiness at not having more books that he likes I cannot take any longer. You guys are always awesome with book recs so I hope you can help me out!

I'm looking for realistic/gritty/dark/low fantasy, in which magic/typical fantasy races do not play a big role storywise. I mean, it's fine if all that's in there, but it shouldn't be an 'I win!' button. The plot can be witty and light, like The lies of Locke Lamora and it's sequel, or more traditional, like Abercrombie's First Law-series, or epic, like George R.R. Martin and Steven Erikson, or gritty like the Black Company books. I hope these books give a good idea of what I'm looking for.

We already have the above-mentioned books and I'm curious whether there's more in this vein. As you can see, most of these books do feature fantasy races & magic, but the plot stays a bit more down to earth and doesn't use magic as the solution to every problem on the road. Anything with a fantasy-flavour would be fine, even alternative history/history with a bit of magic in it. No urban fantasy please!

Update: Thanks for all the good recs so far! I'm not sure what makes me happier, all the good titles or reading all the different opinions on these novels. Thanks, and keep 'em coming!
