seriously evil witch here, guys!

merricat, said constance, would you like a cup of tea?

In the last few days I read first Angela Carter's The Magic Toyshop and then Shirley Jackson's We Have Always Lived In The Castle, and today I meant to write a gushy review for each but ended up writing a ridiculously long post here (full of spoilers) comparing the two books instead. They're both fairly creepy novels about isolated families; one by choice, one not so much. Toyshop is about the family itself, how it changes when three new members, orphaned children, come to join it and bring the outside world with them. Castle is more about the relationship between the family as a whole and the outside world; while nothing supernatural actually happens, the ending makes me think of John Connolly short stories; or maybe MR James. I really enjoyed the 'experience' of having read them in a sort of conjunction, though it was accidental! It was impossible to miss the similarities - or to stop thinking about them.
