Vaughn, Carrie: Kitty Goes to War

Kitty Goes to War (2010)
Written by: Carrie Vaughn
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Pages: 334 (Mass Market Paperback)
Series: Book Eight (ongoing)

The premise: ganked from Amazon.com: Kitty Norville, Alpha werewolf and host of The Midnight Hour, a radio call-in show, is contacted by a friend at the NIH's Center for the Study of Paranatural Biology. Three Army soldiers recently returned from the war in Afghanistan are being held at Ft. Carson in Colorado Springs. They're killer werewolves--and post traumatic stress has left them unable to control their shape-shifting and unable to interact with people. Kitty agrees to see them, hoping to help by bringing them into her pack.

Meanwhile, Kitty gets sued for libel by CEO Harold Franklin after featuring Speedy Mart--his nationwide chain of 24-hour convenience stores with a reputation for attracting supernatural unpleasantness--on her show.

Very bad weather is on the horizon.

My Rating

Worth the Cash: it's a good read. I'm missing the emotional punches that I craved in the first part of the series, but Vaughn's still writing solid stories. I was less invested in the whole lawsuit storyline, though I was pleased to see how it all came together, and the werewolf soldiers could've surprised me more, but I still enjoyed seeing how all of that resolved. It's a good read, and I was thrilled to have Cormac back in the pages, even if it was a little weird between him, Ben, and Kitty. The last page of the book presents a bit of a surprise, given what we've learned about what Kitty can and can't do, so I'm curious to see what direction Vaughn is going in that regard. But overall, a good read that's easy to devour, though as usual, I don't recommend reading this unless you're already caught up on the series. :)

Review style: Since I didn't take any notes at all while reading, there's not a whole lot to say. I want to talk about Cormac and his story (so, uh, SPOILERS) and why I think there's room for a spin-off. I also want to talk about how the supernatural of Kitty's world is starting to stack up next to some other urban fantasy series, namely Patricia Briggs's Mercy Thompson books. Not in a bad way, mind you, just for comparison's sake and how, when you read even a handful of UF, things start to blur a wee bit. As I said, spoilers ahead, so if you haven't read this book (let alone if you're not caught up on the series), there's no need to click for the full review at my LJ below. :) As always, comments and discussion are most welcome. :)
