And now I get specific...

Okay all, I'm looking for recommendations in a very specific type of horror.

Does anyone know of books that follow this basic plotline:

Group of people (friends or not) go to an unfamiliar house.
Weird/creepy/horrific things start happening in the house.
For some reason or another, the people cannot leave the house or the surrounding property.
Chaos and other fun stuff happens.

Anyone know any books like that????

Thanks in advance!

Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House and Richard Matheson's Hell House both follow this general pattern.

That sounds like the second in Tanya Huff's Smoke series, "Smoke and Mirrors". The series is a spin-off from her Blood Noun books, featuring vampire Henry Fitzroy.

The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson.
And Then There Were None by Agatha Christy.
The Shining by Stephen King. (Though it is a hotel rather than a house.)
The Thief of Always by Clive Barker.

And I feel like I'm forgetting something. You'll be the first to know if it comes to me.

It's not a house, but very similar concept: The Ruins.

A friend of mine wrote a story like that starring her RL friends, including me! LOL But I don't think that's what you're looking for (it was kind of like fanfic).

I don't know if you like comics but I'm reading the trades for 'House of Mystery' and it's like that.

It depends on the kind of comic but I'll definitely give it a look :)

The onlt book I could think of (that others hadn't recommended is The House of Leaves that was reviewed earlier on bookish. It is an incredible book but you got to work at it. Joe Hill has Locke and Key out but it's also a comic. I have the first two trades. So far it's good but odd. :-). Hope this helped

OOOh I have House of Leaves. I've been putting off reading it cause I knew it'd take a while but if that's what it's like I may push it up the list!

I just read the woman in the dunes by kobo abe and it's about this entomologist who gets stuck living with this woman in a house filled by sand and he can't escape. it was fantastic, so i recommend it! probably not what you're looking for but it fits the criteria- "cannot leave the house or the surrounding property" so i thought i would mention it. if you also like books with philosophical concepts then you will love it. it's pretty short and an easy read.

:) There was a great YA book with that concept from the "Are You Afraid Of The Dark?" book series. Alas, it is now out of print and hard to find.

Haha, I recently found a website that had allll the episodes on it. I started watching them, but they were way lamer than I remembered, so I decided to stop and just let the good memories be. :)

I didn't read any of the other AYAOTD books, but that one was really awesome. I specifically sought it out on the whatwasthatone comm, but then saw it was out of print. This post is making me want to buy it again. :)
