Long Way Down

Long Way Down by Nick Hornby.
Martin (an ex-TV host who has lost his wife and children and has just gotten out of prison), Maureen (who is worn-out from taking care of her son who has serious brain damage), Jess (a teenage girl with mental problems and a lopsided view of the world), and JJ (who has loss his girl and his band meet on the roof of Topper's House in London with the intention of ending their lives.  Instead they become friends and help each other to get their lives back in some unexpected ways.  The four voices are distinctive but fit well with each other.  This is a book about love, loss, life, pain, and friendship.  At moments it is heartbreaking and at other times it is uplifting.  I almost passed on this book because of the subject matter but I like Nick Hornby.  I'm glad I gave this funny and touching book a go.  I give it 4 3/4 out of 5.
