Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare
This was my first encounter with Shakespeare in a while, and embarrassingly, I haven't read many full texts of his. While the language and flow was inarguably genius (oftentimes on a level we can't understand, I suspect), the imagery of the entire play had a certain unshakable greyness to it. What I mean is, although I realize it was a play and not a novel, it lacked a vividness I look for in my reading. Prose aside, it was rather a drag to read, and I don't know whether I would have made it through if it hadn't been assigned for class. However, one of Shakespeare's strengths that I can guess is present in every one of his works is the characters. The small slants of illumination he let through from certain angles at certain times certainly can't be easily matched; it's almost something effortless. That I liked, and it made the ride far more well worth it. However, it most likely isn't something that'll stick with me.
