I have been meaning to make a post asking this. My book club wants to have a "seasonal" selection for the month of December.

Ooh - Connie Willis's collection of holiday short stories.

Rumer Godden's The Story of Holly and Ivy - I like the one with the illustrations by Barbara Cooney.

I second The Story of Holly and Ivy. You are never too old for this book.

The Hogfather by Terry Pratchett (you can read it as a stand-alone quite easily).
A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens.

One of my personal faves is Ed McBain's "All Through the House". It's part of his 87th Precinct series, and it's both surprisingly sweet and hilarious. From barnesandnoble.com:

Here is an irresistibly charming tale, beautifully packaged in a small, illustrated and slipcased gift book. All's quiet at the 87th Precinct on Christmas Eve . . . until Steve Carella's fellow detectives appear with a kid who's stolen a sheep, a robber with a bagful of gold, two guys fighting over a sack of frankincense, and a young couple who give birth to a baby boy at midnight!

My favorite has to be The Legend of Holly Claus by Brittney Ryan. I think it's a 'young adult' book (it's not very heavy reading, but it might be a bit scary for little ones). The title character, Holly, is the daughter of Santa Claus, and was cursed with a heart surrounded by ice, so she must keep it cold. She goes to New York to earn her story in the Book of Forever (the book that marks all the good deeds of the magical citizens of the Land of Forever). It's a really sweet story, and I loved it.

Actually, I should read it again this Christmas...

I remember a Louisa May Alcott story about Christmas which was very sweet, about a "hired girl" at home while the family is at Christmas Eve services. She talks with common kitchen items about her feelings and how she can help herself. I don't remember which collection I read it in.

Holidays on Ice by David Sedaris; it's actually a collection of essay's but Sedaris is pretty awesome. Also my favorite children's holiday book is Little Gray Rabbit's Christmas by Allison Uttley. It's such a beautiful story, but I'm afraid it might be out of print!

Little Women! It's not really about Christmas, but the first chapter takes place at Christmastime, so it counts, right? :)

For Thanksgiving: Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant, by Ann Tyler.

For Xmas, I can't recall if it specifically mentions Xmas, but Elizabeth Goudge's The Little White Horse has that type of a theme. It's a wonderful book.

Also for Xmas, Holmes for the Holidays. What can I say, I'm a Sherlock Holmes fan. ;>
