overrated: Gone With the Wind Any Jane Austin The Red Badge of Courage Heart of Darkness Edgar Allen Poe's Works Maya Angelou's poetry Anne Sexton's poetry Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep Lolita by Nabokov Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare
underrated: this is harder and i'm pinched for time. will have to think about and come back later.
Chaucer's works Joyce Carol Oates's works L.M. Montgomery's Emily of New Moon trilogy Frank Herbert's Dune Thomas Hardy's novels Nathaniel Hawthorne's novels George Eliot's novels Dostoevsky's works Sir Gawain and the Green Knight Goethe's works
Yes, I realize a lot of these are recognized classics but usually I only hear stuff like Shakespeare, Harry Potter books, and Jane Austin praised these days.
Anything by Neil Gaiman. I've read: American Gods, Anansi Boys and Neverwhere; also Good Omens, which I didn't particularly like even though I like Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels.
Underrated:
Anything by Lucy Maud Montgomery that's not Anne of Green Gables
Overrated: The Da Vinci Code is possibly the most overrated thing in the world. Life of Pi. Unbearable Lightness of Being. The Other Boleyn Girl. The End of Mr. Y.
Underrated: The Minotaur Takes a Cigarette Break by Stephen Sherrill. Silk by Alessandro Baricco
There's probably loads more I could list, but my brain is mush today.
Aww, I really liked Life of Pi. Maybe that's because I read before it was "the" book to read. I had no preconceptions of the book.
(of course, I know nothing about the stasis you were in when you read it and it could just be you didn't like it, which is totally fine. Happens to me all the time.)
Overrated: Twilight The Da Vinci Code / Angels & Demons The Sookie Stackhouse books by Charlaine Harris The Anita Blake books by Laurell K. Hamilton Anything by Anne Rice
Underrated: The early Darkover books by Marion Zimmer Bradley Dune Watership Down
The Time Travellers Wife. I read a load of glowing reviews which had me scratching my head - rarely have I hated a book more. Only after I'd read the thing, I then found a load of reviews saying pretty much what I felt.
Baking Cakes in Kigali, ditto (only even more badly written imo).
Under rated. Urm... *g* Seems incredibly negative of me but right now I can;t think of anything. Most of the books I love are pretty well liked. Maybe The History of Love by Nicole Krauss which I adored for its complexity and language, but I rarely see it recc'd anywhere.
Twilight Love in the Time of Cholera The Grapes of Wrath Harry Potter A Series of Unfortunate events
Underrated:
Dangerous Liaisons by Laclos Peeps by Scott Westerfeld Looking for Alaska Almost anything YA lit that's not Harry Potter or Twilight, actually. The Awakening by Kate Chopin Anything written by Octavia Butler
I'm probably going to be murdered in my sleep for the Harry Potter thing, but I just don't get the obsessions. I mean, I don't think they're BAD (in fact, I would be -really- interested in reading something by JK Rowling that's not HP) but I just don't understand the hype that's come with them. I can think of YA books that are much better than the HP series and don't get nearly as much recognition.
I never understood why people praised Catcher In The Rye. With all the gdamn's it's hard to decipher any real meaning in that book. It has my vote for most overrated book EVER.
Oh yeah, I forgot about underrated. I'm going with the YA series The Mysterious Benedict Society. Even though they're focused on the young readers, I found these books could be enjoyed by anybody. A lovely gem of a series!
I had to read it two semesters in a row plus when I had read it in High School. It took me until the third time to finally figure out what the hell was going on.

Underrated: Sophie's World

I still didn't like it.
