Space Opera Rec with Magic and Adventure?

I discovered the book A Game of Universe by Eric Nylund about ten years ago when it came out, and I've read it several times since then. It's a fast-paced, exciting fantasy/adventure/space opera type of a novel, with a grail quest and a psychologically complex protagonist. Anyway...are there any other books like this out there? It stands out for me as a one-of-a-kind story, but I'd love to read something else in a similar style. None of Eric Nylund's other novels seem quite the same...

I haven't read _A Game of Universe_, but Sharon Lee and Steve Miller write the kind of books you are talking about, especially in their Liaden series. No grail quest, but manners comedy, space mercenaries, magic, and eight-foot-tall sentient Turtles. _Local Custom_ and _Conflict of Honors_ are both good places to start the series.

I think _Local Custom_ is the best starting place. However, I started with _Conflict of Honors_ and that works too.
