funny?

I just bought The Sot-Weed factor by John Barth after reading some Amazon reviews about it being funny. I've flipped through some of the pages and I'm kind of unsure - it seems like kind of stiff, old-ish writing, and I can't exactly equate that with humor. Has anyone else read it, and was it funny?
