Captain Wentworth's Diary

I've been stuck at page 408 of the Last Cavelier for four months now (yeah that's only half way through) and at christmas i was given  Captain Wentworth's Diary by Amanda Grange so i read it in two days. it basically retold Persuarion by Jane Austen, but i kind of liked it which i wasn't expecting. the author did a really good job of not copying the original story, yet she remained true to it. sure there were places where she quotes Austen directly, but it seemed necessary. i've read some where i wonder if i even read the same book as the author.

i'm wary of spin offs, nothing is as good as the original and they should just be left alone. besides spin offs? aren't they just professional fan fiction? but this author has written one about Mr. Darcy and i was wondering if i should give it a go? i was just curious.
