Win and Lose

The library called on Saturday. I had won the book I had bid on at silent auction. Part of me was skipping up and down but another part, a darker part, was wondering how smart it was to spend $35 on a book that I didn’t strictly need.

A bookstore owner once told me how wonderful it was that I devoted a portion of my income to books. Though I agree with him, lately I’ve been scaling back. I’ve been question how much I need that book I see in the store window and I’ve reacquainted myself with the public library. Constant talk of recession has me skittish and entertainment is the easiest thing to scale back on.

Ironic, considering the medium I love (and the field I hope to break into) depends on people parting with their money in exchange for a stack of bound papers.
