DC History book?

Hi,

My friend is a history teacher in Washington DC, and he has to teach a course on DC history. Unfortunately, the only thing he can find is this series on the history of each neighborhood. Any ideas on where he could look for a text on the general (not by neighborhood) history of DC?

Thanks in advance!
