Bill Bryson, Made in America: An Informal History of the English Language in the United States

I just finished Bill Bryson's Made in America. It was the first Bill Bryson book I've read, and I loved it. He is a great writer with an easy, conversational style, countless amusing anecdotes and tangents, and a sense of humor.

I plan on reading his Mother Tongue (a history of the English language) and Notes from a Small Island (which he wrote during his travels in England).

Apparently a lot of people were disappointed with Made in America because it had more history and less language than they expected. But this being my first Bryson book, and having no presuppositions, I loved it.
