Dan Simmons: Ilium

A question for anyone who's read Dan Simmons' "Ilium" books. I've seen them around, and I do love Greek myths and retellings of them - but. The only other book of Simmons' that I've ever read was "Song of Kali", and while it wasn't as bad as some I could name, I didn't think very much of it. (I know, I know, it's won all these awards, but seriously. Lovecraft scares me more than anything in that book. It felt... unfinished... to me.)

In other words: can you tell me if it's worth revising my opinion of his slightly lacklustre writing skills and reading his science-fiction books?
