Reading: Survivor by Octavia Butler Part One

Survivor is technically a part of Butler’s Patternist sequence, except Butler disowned it. She also referred to it as her “Star Trek novel” for reasons which may soon become clear. I acquired Survivor via slightly sneaky means, in this case a pdf. file that I downloaded. The copy has a lot of typos and in general is kind of cruddy but still readable.
Here is an overview of the Patternist series. Once upon a time there was a powerful telepath named Doro and a powerful shape changer named Anyanwu. They got along like a literal house on fire by which I mean there was screaming and dead bodies.

Why would an author disown her own novel? I mean, some of my novels are better than others, but weird.

I would assume because she wasn't happy with it, and wasn't willing to the the Marion Zimmer Bradley thing which is "write another book that completely ignores the canon of the previous book ad nauseum."

I love the cover art

I can't stand the cover art. are those leg-like roots supposed to humerus? is the hulking figure looming above the woman supposed to be scary? Helpful? Is she praying to him?

Yes the cover is basically terrible, but do you have any thoughts about the book? Have you read the book? Have you read the synopsis I wrote of the book?

I read your synopsys, but the cover overwhelms everything.
Cringe-worthy Awful, who are the publishers trying to appeal to?

its ambiguous but gets you asking questions, sounds like it had the desired effect
